Getting My Own Sauna Built in Shenzhen

So, I decided I wanted my own sauna room right here in Shenzhen. Got tired of the public ones, you know? Wanted something just for me, at home. The idea stuck, and I started thinking, how hard could it be?

First thing, I started looking around. Didn’t just jump online, though. I asked some friends, checked out a few places that do home renovations. It’s Shenzhen, right? Lots of options, but finding someone who really specializes in saunas, proper ones, took a bit of digging. Found a couple of workshops, small places mostly, not big fancy showrooms.

Went to visit one place that looked promising. Talked to the main guy there. Showed him the space I had in my apartment – it wasn’t huge, just a corner in a spare room. We talked about size, what kind of wood. I kinda liked the look of cedar, smells nice too. He suggested it, said it’s good for saunas. We also discussed the heater – electric seemed easiest for an apartment setup. Didn’t want anything too complicated.

Designing it wasn’t too bad. The guy sketched something up based on my corner space. We tweaked it a bit, made sure the door opened the right way, stuff like that. Felt pretty hands-on, which was good. I wanted to understand how it was gonna come together.

Then came the building part. This took longer than I thought. They pre-fabbed most of the panels at their workshop. Took about two weeks, I think. Then they brought everything over. Installation day was… interesting. Two guys came. Took them a whole day to put it all together in my spare room. It was noisy, dusty, but they seemed to know what they were doing. Had one small issue where a panel wasn’t fitting quite right, they had to trim it on the spot. A bit messy, but they cleaned up okay afterwards.

Getting it connected was the next step. Had to get an electrician to run a dedicated line for the heater. Didn’t want to risk overloading my existing circuits. That added a bit more cost and another day of work, but better safe than sorry, right?

Finally, it was done. Looked pretty neat, actually. Smelled great, that cedar wood. Did the first heat-up test. Took a while to get to temperature, maybe 40 minutes? But yeah, it worked. Had my first proper session that evening. Felt good. Real good.

So yeah, that’s my journey getting a custom sauna built here. Wasn’t exactly smooth sailing all the way, had a few small bumps, like the panel fitting and needing a separate electrician. But overall, pretty happy with how it turned out. Having my own little sweatbox at home is definitely worth the hassle.
