My Trip to a Korean Sauna Place in Shenzhen

Alright, so the other day I felt kinda beat, you know? Shenzhen life gets hectic. Heard about these Korean-style saunas, jjimjilbangs they call ’em I think, popping up around the city. Never really tried one properly, so I figured, why not give it a shot? Needed to unwind.

Found a place that looked decent enough online, didn’t bother much with reviews, just went. Got there in the afternoon. The entrance was pretty big, kinda flashy, trying to look fancy I guess. Walked in, and the first thing was the front desk.

Paid the entry fee, wasn’t too cheap but not crazy expensive either. They gave me this electronic wristband thingy, like you get at a water park. That’s your key for the locker and also how you pay for stuff inside, like snacks or drinks. Smart, keeps you from carrying cash when you’re half-naked.

First stop, the shoe lockers right near the entrance. Swapped my shoes for some slippers they provided. Then headed into the changing room, men’s side obviously. Found my locker number, matched the wristband. Stripped down, put all my stuff inside. They give you this uniform, kinda like pajamas, shorts and a t-shirt. Pretty comfy, actually.

Showering is a must first. That’s the rule. Big open shower area, lots of shower heads, soap and shampoo provided. Did that, got clean before heading into the main event.

Trying Out the Sauna Rooms

Okay, changed into the uniform, walked out into the main common area. It was huge! Lots of people chilling, lying on the floor, some watching TV on big screens. The floor itself was heated, felt really nice on the feet.

The main reason I came was the sauna rooms. They had several, all different themes and temperatures:

  • The Salt Room: Walls lined with big blocks of salt, maybe Himalayan salt? It was warm, not super hot. Supposedly good for your skin or breathing, I dunno. Just sat there for a bit, felt relaxing.
  • The Hot Jade Room: This one was warmer. Floor and walls had jade stones embedded. Felt the heat soaking in more here. Stayed maybe 10 minutes.
  • The Real Hot One (Clay/Charcoal?): Okay, this one was properly hot. Like, sweat-immediately hot. Walls looked like baked clay or something. Couldn’t stay too long, maybe 5 minutes max before I felt like I was cooking. Good sweat though.
  • The Ice Room: After the super hot room, went straight into this freezing cold room. Walls covered in frost. Whoa! Big temperature shock. Supposed to close your pores or something. Only lasted a minute, brrr.

Did a cycle like that a couple of times: hot room, sweat, then maybe cool down a bit, then the ice room. Felt pretty good, like I was flushing out toxins, or at least flushing out sweat.

Chilling and Snacking

In between sauna sessions, I just found a spot in the big common hall. Lots of mats and pillows scattered around. Grabbed one, lay down on the warm floor. Some people were sleeping, others quietly chatting or on their phones. Watched some Korean drama on the TV for a bit, no clue what was happening but it was background noise.

Felt a bit peckish after all that sweating. Went over to the snack counter. Used my wristband to order. Got that classic Korean sauna combo: the sweet rice drink (sikhye) and a couple of those baked eggs. You know, the brown ones? Cracked the egg on my head like they do in the shows (okay, maybe just tapped it gently). The drink was cold and sweet, perfect after the heat. The eggs were… well, they were hard-boiled eggs, tasted fine.

Spent a few hours just rotating between the saunas, the chilling area, and sipping my drink. Didn’t try the massage services or anything extra, just wanted the basic sauna experience.

Heading Out

Eventually felt relaxed enough, like I’d steamed out all the stress. Headed back to the locker room. Took another quick shower, changed back into my street clothes. Put the used uniform in the bin they provided.

Went back to the front desk. Handed them my wristband. They scanned it, checked if I bought anything extra (just the snacks and drink), paid the difference. Got my shoes back from the locker.

Walked out feeling super clean, very relaxed, maybe a bit sleepy. Skin felt smooth too. It was a good few hours spent, definitely a decent way to disconnect inside the city. Yeah, I’d probably do it again when I need a proper deep relaxation session. It’s quite a process, but kinda worth it.
