My Trip Down to a Luohu Water Club

Okay, so I was feeling pretty beat last week. Work was crazy, you know how it is. Needed a proper break. I’d heard folks talking about these big ‘water clubs’ or spas over in Luohu, Shenzhen. Never been to one quite like they described, so I thought, why not check it out? Just wanted to properly switch off for a few hours.

Hopped on the metro, ended up in Luohu. Found one of these places – pretty easy to spot, they often look quite grand from the outside. Walked into the lobby, and yeah, it was pretty spacious, maybe a bit over the top with the decor, but clean. Staff pointed me towards the reception desk.

Getting Sorted Inside

First thing, you gotta check in. They gave me this electronic wristband thing. That’s your key, your wallet, everything while you’re inside. Used it to open my locker in the changing room. Place was massive, rows and rows of lockers. Got my gear off, locked my wallet and phone away, and put on the standard issue shorts and top they provide. Felt a bit like being in PE class again, but hey, everyone’s wearing the same thing.

Headed to the ‘wet area’ first. Had a good shower, then checked out the pools. They usually have a few options:

  • A big warm pool, good for just soaking.
  • Sometimes a really hot one.
  • Maybe a freezing cold plunge pool (nope, not for me!).
  • Saunas and steam rooms too.

I spent a fair bit of time just soaking in the warm pool, trying the sauna. Did feel pretty good, started to loosen up.

Relaxation and Extras

After the water stuff, dried off and went to the main lounge area. This is usually huge, full of big, comfy reclining armchairs. Loads of people just chilling, watching TV (often built into the chair), or sleeping. Staff wander around offering free fruit and drinks, which is a nice touch.

Saw they had a menu for extra services – massages, body scrubs, ear cleaning, all sorts. Figured I was here, might as well get a massage. Flagged down a staff member, picked a basic body massage. They led me off to a quieter area, usually small rooms or curtained-off sections.

The massage itself? It was decent. Did the job, worked out some knots in my shoulders. It was a pretty standard Chinese style massage, quite firm. Felt better afterwards, definitely more relaxed.

Felt a bit peckish later. Many of these places have food, sometimes a full buffet included in the entry or charged extra. Found the restaurant area, grabbed a plate. Food was okay, plenty of choice, nothing gourmet but good enough fuel. Went back to my comfy chair for a bit, almost nodded off.

Checking Out and Heading Home

Decided it was time to call it a day. Headed back to the changing room, used my wristband to get my stuff from the locker. Got dressed back into my normal clothes.

Walked back to the main reception desk at the entrance. Handed over the wristband. They scan it, and it pulls up everything you’ve used – the entry fee, the massage, any food or drinks not included. It’s all tracked on that little band. Settled the bill right there.

Walked out feeling way less stressed than when I arrived. It’s quite an experience, these places. Very systematic, almost like a factory for relaxation, but it worked. Felt properly rested. Worth doing if you need to seriously unwind for an afternoon or evening, I reckon.
